Larry Jones

Larry N. Jones, 78, of Waynesboro, PA passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born December 18, 1942 in Rockingham County, VA he was the son of the late Charles Beverly Jones and Mabel (Combs) Jones Grove.

Larry retired from the Smithsonian Institution as a Museum Specialist, Agriculture Collection. He worked at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. He was involved in many exhibits and consultations spanning his career, with Agriculture Conservation being his specialty.

A few of the projects he was involved with include restoration of the Burton Cotton Gin as well as the restoration of the Hart-Parr #3 which is the oldest surviving internal combustion engine tractor in the United States. He also worked on a special running of “The John Bull,” the world’s oldest operable locomotive.

He provided technical assistance on Sitton & Utley’s book From Can See to Can’t: Texas Cotton Farmers on the Southern Prairies. Larry also assisted with the curating and installation of various exhibits in the museum including Maritime Hall. Prior to beginning his career with the Smithsonian, he worked as a supervisor during the construction of Interstate 64 in Virginia.

After retirement, Larry enjoyed working in his shop on their farmette. He continued to restore antique farm machinery and perform consultation work. Larry also enjoyed providing “hay rides” at the annual apple festival, pumpkin picking and Christmas tree farm with the South Mountain Antique Engine Association.

Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara (Fish) Lasch; a daughter, Flemming Jones Paschal (Charles); two grandchildren, Jessica M. Paschal and Alexander C. Paschal; two step-sons, Erik Lasch (Daphne) and Marc Lasch; two step-grandchildren, Jayson and Brayden Lasch; and a sister, Carolyn (Jones) Foyle (Bill Nuckols).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers, stepfather Ralph Grove and brother-in-law Berny Foyle.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by SimpleChoice Cremation Services, Inc., Chambersburg, PA.
