Richard R Swanger

Richard R. Swanger (Dick), born on July 19, 1937, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, passed away at the age of 87 on December 21, 2024. He was a cherished member of his community and attended Falling Spring Presbyterian Church.

 Dick graduated from CASHs. He worked at Corning Glass from 1959 to 1961 before embarking a 37-year tenure as a shift supervisor in the printing department at James River from 1961 to 1998. In addition to, he served as a Deputy Game Warden for 27 years (1980-2007) and was a Hunter Education Instructor for 40 years.

 His commitment extended to his military service, where he served with both the Army and National Guard, contributing to his country with honor and dedication.

 Dick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Modena J. Swanger; daughter Gina R. Thomas; son, Richard "Dickie" Swanger and his wife, Kristy; stepdaughters, Candy Hockenberry (Tracy) and stepson, Warren "David" Hockenberry (Kristen). His legacy continues through his grandchildren Walter Keith IV, Wesley Swanger, Travis Swanger, Bethany McCloskey, Ashlynn Swanger, Lindsey Swanger and step-grandchildren Reace Hartman, Madison Hartman, Katlyn Hockenberry, Kolton Hockenberry and four great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his siblings, Donald Swanger, Gerald Swanger, Dale Swanger,and Janet Derrick. Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Swanger; his parents, Charles and Cecelia Millhouse Swanger; and siblings, Harry “Sonny” Swanger, Phyllis Swanger Kirby, Floyd Swanger, Wayne Swanger, and John Swanger.

 An avid outdoorsman, Dick enjoyed hunting and golf. He was also a fan of watching baseball and football, particularly cheering for his team, The Eagles.

 A celebration of Dick’s life will be announced at a later date. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, memories and stories about Dick are shared, which will be cherished and help keep his spirit alive.
