He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Five. During his service, he received The Meritorious Service Medal for exemplary handling of all duties for the deployment movement control of the 153rd Military Police Company to Saudi Arabia and the 249th Engineer Detachment to Iraq in support of the Global War on Terrorism. This medal attested to his professional knowledge, attention to detail and ability to adapt. These traits aligned with the highest military traditions and reflected great credit to himself, the Delaware Army National Guard, and the United States Army. Walker also received many other awards, ribbons and medals, which included The Army Commendation Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Conspicuous Service Cross and many fitness awards.
Walker’s career as a Systems Analyst at the Letterkenny Army Depot led him to meet the love of his life, his late wife, Ruth “Sandy” A. Roschinsky, in 1983. They married on June 2, 1990 and remained happily in love until her passing in April 2021. Shortly after retiring from his federal employment in 1993, he became a Park Ranger at the Caledonia State Park and retired from the park in 2008.
Walker had a passion for many things in life, but his number one passion was hunting. This passion started at a very young age, and he was one of the founding members of his hunting camp in Sullivan County, PA, The Penny Hill Whitetails, Inc. established in 1967. He also was an advent runner in his earlier years and participated in many marathons. Walker was an active member of his community, frequently volunteering and serving as the Treasurer with the Friends of Caledonia State Park. He also volunteered at the Letterkenny Rod and Gun Club for many years where he would help with the hunting assignments, and the pheasant, duck and geese programs. Walker had a love of nature and wild life. He often rescued stray kittens and helped trap and relocate wild life. He was a devoted member of the Bluebird Society of PA where he monitored and maintained many bluebird nestboxes in the Franklin County area.
While Walker was not a man of many words, he was intelligent, loved to serve his community, and showed his love in many ways by his acts of service and quality time. Many who knew Walker will remember him for his contagious smile, laughter, and sense of humor, but above all, his generosity and selfless nature. He valued being a good patron to local businesses, surrounding communities, and various organizations including local fire companies and the Fraternal Order of Police. Walker enjoyed spending time with his family and friends creating memories during family picnics and gatherings, attending various activities such as dance recitals and soccer games for his beloved granddaughter, Ashley Bawell, and family vacations to Myrtle Beach and Ocean City, Maryland. He also provided exceptional care to his beloved wife, Ruth, in the last few years of her life.
Per Walker’s wishes, there will be no funeral or public memorial service, but private ceremonies will be held with family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of Caledonia, 391 Brandy Run Rd, Newville, PA 17241 or The Bluebird Society of PA, PO Box 756, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
